چکیده

A modified embedded-atom method (MEAM) interatomic potential for the Fe–C binary system has been developed using previous MEAM potentials of Fe and C. The potential parameters were determined by fitting to experimental information on the dilute heat of solution of carbon, the vacancy–carbon binding energy and its configuration, the location of interstitial carbon atoms and the migration energy of carbon atoms in body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe, and to a first-principles calculation result for the cohesive energy of a hypothetical NaCl-type FeC. The potential reproduces the known physical properties of carbon as an interstitial solute element in bcc Fe and face-centered cubic Fe very well. The applicability of this potential to atomistic approaches for investigating interactions between carbon interstitial solute atoms and other defects such as vacancies, dislocations and grain boundaries, and also for investigating the effects of carbon on various deformation and mechanical behaviors of iron is demonstrated. 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. A charge transfer ionic–embedded atom method potential for the O–Al–Ni–Co–Fe system

Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) require the growth of a thin (∼20 Å) dielectric metal oxide layer, such as Al2O3, on a ferromagnetic metal layer, such as Co, CoFe, or CoNiFe. The atomic assembly mechanisms that combine to form a uniformly thin metal oxide layer on these metal surfaces are not well understood. The application of molecular dynamics simulations to the growth of metal and metal ox...

Phase stability in the Fe–Ni system: Investigation by first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations

First-principles calculations of the energy of various crystal structures of Fe, Ni and ordered Fe–Ni compounds with different stoichiometries have been performed by the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method in the generalized gradient approximation. The most stable compounds are L12–Ni3Fe, L10–FeNi, C11f–Ni2Fe and C11f–Fe2Ni. The L12–Ni3Fe compound has the largest negative formation en...

Developing a second nearest-neighbor modified embedded atom method interatomic potential for lithium

This paper reports the development of a second nearest-neighbor modified embedded atom method (2NN MEAM) interatomic potential for lithium (Li). The 2NN MEAM potential contains 14 adjustable parameters. For a given set of these parameters, a number of physical properties of Li were predicted by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. By fitting these MD predictions to their corresponding values fr...

Improved modified embedded-atom method potentials for gold and silicon

The modified embedded-atom method interatomic potentials for pure gold and pure silicon are improved in their melting point and latent heat predictions, by modifying the multi-body screening function and the equation of state function. The fitting of the new parameters requires rapid calculations of melting point and latent heat, which are enabled by efficient free-energy methods. The results p...

Study of Interatomic Potentials Using the Crystal-GRID Method on Oriented Single Crystals of Ni, Fe, and Cr

The Crystal-GRID method is used to study interatomic collisions at low energy in metals and such to probe the repulsive interatomic potential. Line shapes of gamma rays, emitted by the recoiling (59)Ni isotope after thermal neutron capture in Ni single crystals, were measured and compared to results obtained by molecular dynamics simulations of the slowing down. The same procedure is also used ...
